TCM Irregular Menstruation Treatment Theory

From a Chinese medicine perspective irregular menstruation usually involves the Spleen, which is responsible for the production of Blood, a/or the Liver, which is responsible for the storage and smooth circulation of Blood. The Spleen is effected by emotions such as worry and upset and by lifestyle habits such as a poor diet or over or under exercising. The Liver is effected by emotions such as anger and frustration and by diets high in fried a/or fatty foods and alcohol. Some of the common lifestyle habits which may contribute to this are:

  • excessive or lack of exercise (blood deficiency or blood stagnation, respectively)
  • poor dietary habits - especially fried foods a/or alcohol (leads to heat and/or stagnation)
  • repressed or overly expressed emotions - especially anger a/or grief (leads to poor circulation/stagnation)
