Traditional Chinese Medicine is generally very helpful for a wide range of menstrual issues. Within TCM theory, amenorrhea can have multiple causes and/or contributing factors. Some of the more prevalent factors are outlined below:
- Emotional Factors:
- Anger/Frustration can stagnant the Qi a/or Blood leading to amenorrhea
- Sadness/Grief can weaken the upper warmer (HT/LU) and disrupt the Lungs command of the Qi and the Hearts command of the Blood leading to a decrease in the production or Blood a/or the ability of the Blood to descend through the uterus
- Overthinking can effects the LU & SP, SP weakness may lead to a decrease in Blood production
- Sudden Emotional Shock can lead to amenorrhea
- Excessive Physical Work a/or Exercise can deplete the SP Qi leading to a decrease in the production of Blood, teenagers who exercise strenously
- Overwork can deplete the KD and the LV (Yin a/or Blood) and lead to amenorrhea, women over the age of 30 who work for long hours and have correspondingly poor diets, exercise habits a/or rest
- Hereditary Weaknesses of jing/essence can be a cause of primary amenorrhea
- Diet is an important factor - dieting, eating disorders, poor vegetarian diets may all lead to Qi and Blood deficiencies which may disrupt menstruation
