Wen Dan Wan - Anxiety, Palpitations, Insomnia Herbal Formula
Uses: Insomnia, Palpitations, Anxiety, Gnawing Hunger. Wen Dan Pian (Wen Dan Tang Wan, Rising Courage Teapills), literally translates as the "Warm The Gallbladder" Formula. This formula is a famous herbal remedy for insomnia and/or anxiety particularly when it arises from "phlegm-heat" in Traditional Chinese Medicine terms. The concepts of dampness and phlegm in Chinese Medicine are much broader than in our western understanding of mucus as they have to do with the smooth flow of energy and emotions in our body. Dampness can arise from overwork, over thinking, poor diet, etc. and can congeal into phlegm which can block the body's energy and generate heat. It is the rising heat which leads to the symptoms for which this formula is used best. Symptoms that are appropriate for this formula are dizziness, insomnia, palpitations, anxiety, panic attacks, particularly when these symptoms are accompanied with hunger, nausea and/or vomiting or a bitter taste in the mouth. A clinical study comparing this formula with fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem) for GAD (Generalized Anxiety disorder) found nearly identical results with no side effects on the herbal formula side.*
