What does my body think of me? - an exercise

The relationship we have with our body has profound influence in life.  Yet this is a topic that gets rarely discussed, perhaps due to our familiarity with our body.  Nevertheless, I find it an important aspect of healing, especially for the chronic cases.  The understanding and deepened relationship within ourselves is a fundamental event to healing of the whole being, and often leads to a heightened state of awareness of the self.

I have attempted to collect and present here some questions / exercise that might help in this endeavor.

Take a moment to sit silently.  Spend some time to become aware of your body.
Then ask, giving enough time between the questions:

What are my emotions toward my body?

How did I get them?

How does my body help or hinder my goals in life?

Now, long-awaited questions:

How does my body feel about my goals?

What does it think of me?

I take time to listen.

I carefully examine our dialog to see

if my body fears me

or if any other feelings are present.

I then ask what it expects of me.

I tell it what my expectations are.

How fair are they?

They say in the Orient,

"think with your body."

What does it mean?

I ask my body for help.

The conversation continues,

until there is a feeling

that the differences have lessened,

or the relationship has deepened.

And I sit lazily

enjoying all sensations

from my body,

all sound and air around me,

and me.
