hypertension

I have a client that began seeing me mid-nov. for his high blood pressure (HBP).
Stats:
He's a big guy, bigger in the middle.
Sort of a tough guy, brute.
41 yrs old. Father also has HBP.
Did LOTS of coke up until Feb of last yr.
Huge drinker (several nights a week/several drinks)
Did these things for about 20+ yrs.
Quit drinking out of fear he was going to stroke out from the sx's listed below. Hasn't had a drink since early Nov.
States he does feel better and more energized since not drinking.
He also smokes 6+ cigs a day.
Now he has been on BP meds for 6 yrs and the dr has had to switch them up due to the ineffectiveness of them. Finally, he's on  verapamil. This dose has had to be increased 2x.
At this dose, BP was still spiking more than once a day to 180/100. Ringing in the ears is on and off, dizziness is constant (thinks its from the meds). Numbness/tingling in extremities comes and goes.

Also, has severe eczema, since teen yrs.
Get's bloody noses, esp in the morning.
Bad cough fits. Not too phlegmy. But phlegm or blood in the morning from sinuses.
really runny eyes. clear, runny, like down the cheeks eyes, worse on windy days. they also get red.
Has a job he hates and really stresses him out. Has several resumes in for a new job. Can't really work out as he's on his feet all day as a chef. Works afternoon into late at night. The last thing on his time off he wants to do is walk or anything. It's long hours and he's tired and feels stuck.

pulses are rapid and bounding, meds? ? he says his rate is normally 75 +.
tongue: some weeks it's red on sides and tip. not always.
there is always a coat, white, yellow, most often yellow/green and thick. When it's not that thick, there may be red points in st position that show.

Been seeing him weekly for acupuncture and herbs. He's eating well, lot's of veggies, no fried foods etc.. Sometimes he will get up a little early and walk a little around the neighborhood but rarely.
I have suggested green tea to sooth and help aid the digestion of fats, and CoQ10 to help rebuild and boost cardio health.
Acupuncture:
Normally using: Plus or minus a point or two:

But I may also use ear pnts, back xu pnts. Always, he claims to not notice any difference at all.

Herbs (all granulars): began prescrbing after two weeks just acupuncture to get a feel for px.

Ze xie

cang zhu
mu dan pi
yi yi ren
dai zhi shi

follow up he reports no more daily spikes. Feeling better all around. Also, the edema in his legs is about 50% better.
Remained on this for a couple of weeks. Px was ready to make it stronger, really ready address the bp issues as he was still feeling dizzy, ear ringing, numbness, sometimes in his arms at nite waking him up.
New formula:
Dang gui
ge gen
ze zie
dai zhi shi
gou teng
chuan niu xi
hong hua
du zhing
fu ling.
Px. reported feeling the herbs in 30 seconds. Less tense, and dizzy. Like the herbs were softening the vessles. Still REALLY REALLY STRESSED.

I kept this formula for a few weeks. But sx's would come back. His diasolic is the most stubborn. The spikes are very much work related. Ezcema is back, he got a sinus infection real bad (took antibiotics and was pretty much better by the time he saw me again) so I sent him back on the intitail formula to regualte water/phlegm. But his eczema is even worse and the BP is back up.
What am I doing wrong or rather what can we expect from tx's? I know it can take time but I honestly don't know why the diastolic would keep hovering, and why the sx's come and go so much. The ear ringing and numbness never went away or even got much better.

The very last formula I added a little bit of shi gao and long dan cao to clear out the yrs of drugs and booze. He left a message "i can tell my body really doesn't like this formula". Don't know the details of this yet but it seems like he just likes a heavy dai zhi shi/gou teng formula. But anything that treats the root he seems to have adverse reactions to. I get the impression that he doesn't see much improvement, and sometimes, I wonder too. I mean, a full 3 months into this and he's still dizzy, bloody noses, numbness, ear ringing, and BP spiking about once a week again. Sigh.
Words? Thoughts?
Thanks.
