Natural and Alternative Sciatica Treatment Options

Sciatica Treatment {introduction}

Sciatica is a condition characterized by radiating pain that originates in the lower back and extends down the back of the legs, sometimes down to the feet. The pain is caused by the application of pressure to the sciatic nerve, which extends from the lower back down the back of the leg. Commonly the pressure is the result of a herniated, or ruptured, disc in the lower back. A herniated disc occurs when one of the pieces of soft material found between each vertebrae (called discs) becomes displaced from the spine or ruptures. With sciatica, the ruptured disc creates pressure that presses against the sciatic nerve, resulting in radiating pain down the leg. Sciatica can also be the result of a pelvic injury or spinal stenosis, a narrowing in the spine.
Below you will find alternative and natural treatment options including those from a Chinese Medicine perspective for Sciatica.

TCM Diagnostic Patterns Related to Sciatica

Listed below are Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnostic patterns that are commonly involved with this western medical condition/symptom. Properly applied, Chinese Medicine (including acupuncture and herbal medicine) treats patterns not individual symptoms/conditions which may better account for the range of symptoms often experienced by individuals. Pattern diagnosis/treatment is a crucial part of using Chinese Medicine for disease prevention instead of focusing on solely symptomatic treatments as is somewhat more common in western medicine. For more on this concept, please read What Does Acupuncture Treat? Or Treating the "Cause" and not the "Symptoms".

    In mid-June, 2011, coinciding with date of the lunar eclipse, I leaned forward and felt my sacroileac joint complain loudly. Pain shot down from the middle of my right buttock through my ankle and toes. I find the human capacity to carry only a dim memory of prior pain remarkable. If not for that, few siblings would be born! Years ago, the result of being rear-ended in an auto accident. I was diagnosed with two “bulging” discs at L4-5 and L5-S1; Qigong and swimming have kept awareness of this old injury but a dim memory.

              How do you know whether the pain you are experiencing is really caused by Sciatica? Even if it is, does the label “sciatica” help reduce your discomfort?
