Natural and Alternative Neck Pain Treatment Options

Neck Pain Treatment {introduction}

Neck pain or stiffness can be caused by several different conditions, lifestyle factors or traumas, and can occur in the muscle, nerves, discs and cervical spine. Some conditions related to neck pain include fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, spinal stenosis, infection, herniated cervical disc, or spine-related cancer. Certain lifestyle factors such as poor posture and awkward sleeping positions can also contribute to neck pain, especially minor strain. Traumas can lead to certain neck issues as well, such as whiplash or bone fracture.
Below you will find alternative and natural treatment options including those from a Chinese Medicine perspective for neck pain.

TCM Diagnostic Patterns Related to Neck Pain

Listed below are Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnostic patterns that are commonly involved with this western medical condition/symptom. Properly applied, Chinese Medicine (including acupuncture and herbal medicine) treats patterns not individual symptoms/conditions which may better account for the range of symptoms often experienced by individuals. Pattern diagnosis/treatment is a crucial part of using Chinese Medicine for disease prevention instead of focusing on solely symptomatic treatments as is somewhat more common in western medicine. For more on this concept, please read What Does Acupuncture Treat? Or Treating the "Cause" and not the "Symptoms".

There are no tcm differential pattern diagnoses listed for this pattern at this time.

    Qigong exercise has been shown in multiple studies to produce a wide array of health benefits with extremely limited chances of any side effects.  While the idea of moving slower to strengthen your bones, your heart, your immunity and other functions is a somewhat new concept to those from a western exercise background, the clinical and practical evidence is strong for qigong.

          In 1920, Hans Bergen measured variations in the voltage of the brain and discovered there exist 2 main properties regarding brain waves: amplitude and frequency.  Amplitude being the fullness or strength of bio electrical current via synapses in cells of our body and frequency refers to the rate of pulsing or vibratory cyclical wave like movement between the firing cells.

    An interesting study was recently published in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies.  Researchers from Tsukuba University of Technology performed a small study looking at the effects of practitioner skill and efficacy.  While many of us who have had massage have experienced both good and bad massages.  But what makes the difference?  Massage therapy is actually a very difficult skill that requires a mix of natural talent and trained ability which people can learn from good instructors.
