Natural and Alternative Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Treatment Options

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Treatment {introduction}

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a type of motor neuron disease, which degenerates and eventually kills the nerve cells that control voluntary movement of the muscles. Also called Lou Gehrig's Disease, ALS occurs when the motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord (called upper and lower neurons, respectively) weaken and eventually become unable to transmit messages to the muscles, which controls their function. The muscles progressively weaken, leading to atrophy and involuntary twitches.

Below you will find alternative and natural treatment options including those from a Chinese Medicine perspective for ALS.

TCM Diagnostic Patterns Related to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

Listed below are Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnostic patterns that are commonly involved with this western medical condition/symptom. Properly applied, Chinese Medicine (including acupuncture and herbal medicine) treats patterns not individual symptoms/conditions which may better account for the range of symptoms often experienced by individuals. Pattern diagnosis/treatment is a crucial part of using Chinese Medicine for disease prevention instead of focusing on solely symptomatic treatments as is somewhat more common in western medicine. For more on this concept, please read What Does Acupuncture Treat? Or Treating the "Cause" and not the "Symptoms".

There are no tcm differential pattern diagnoses listed for this pattern at this time.

    ALS or "Lou Gehrig's Disease" is a quickly debilitating and near exclusively fatal neuro-degenerative disease with no known cure.  Chinese Medicine including herbal medicine, acupuncture, Tong Ren Therapy, Tuina and other aspects has been used to help slow the progression of the disease, but has of yet to reverse it.  A small US study recently used acupoint injection therapy using enercel (an herbal preparation described below) to look for neurological improvement.

    Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, Lou Gehrig's Disease) is a progressive motor neuron condition that leads to serious disability and, in most cases, is ultimately fatal.  Acupuncture is used clinically to help manage the symptoms of ALS and patients often do very well with treatment - often prolonging their lives by minimizing current symptoms and slowing the progression of the disease.
